According to the China Manned Space Agency (CMSA), Yaping ventured outside the Chinese Tiangong space station with astronaut Zhai Zhigang for six hours to install the equipment and work on the station’s robotic arm. They also tested the safety of the supporting equipment.

“This marks the first extravehicular activity of the Shenzhou-13 crew, and it is also the first activity in Chinese space history that includes the participation of a female astronaut,” CMSA said in its statement. “The whole process was smooth and successful.”

Yaping, Chai and fellow astronaut Yi Guangfu are all part of the Chinese Shenzhou-13 crew, which blasted off into space on Oct. 16. The crew is on a six-month mission in the Tianhe module, which is the core of the space station. Although the plant is currently incomplete, China plans to have it fully crewed and up and running by the end of 2022.

Compared to the International Space Station (ISS), Tiangong’s range is expected to be much smaller. Tiangong will only have three modules, while the ISS will have 16. However, due to the 2011 US modification wolf, Chinese astronauts cannot dock at the ISS.

Before Yaping, only 15 women in the world had taken spacewalks. Soviet cosmonaut Svetlana Savitskaya was the first woman to complete one in 1984, but since then American NASA astronauts have taken spacewalks.
