The New York Times reported that the FBI searched the home of James O’Keefe, founder of the conservative group Project Veritas, on Saturday as part of its investigation into the possible theft of memos belonging to Ashley Biden, President Biden’s daughter.
The search for O’Keefe’s apartment in Mamaroneck, New York, comes a day after O’Keefe released a statement acknowledging that the group, which specializes in “sting” videos showing activists, politicians and the media, had been contacted by people claiming to have a diary. Ashley. O’Keefe said the group decided not to publish it.
“Late last year, guides contacted us claiming to have a copy of Ashley Biden’s memoir,” O’Keefe said in a statement on the Project Veritas website. “The tipsters indicated that they were negotiating with a different media outlet for payments for the notes.”
He continued, “At the end of the day, we made the ethical decision because, in part, we were unable to determine whether the diary was real, whether the diary actually belonged to Ashley Biden, or whether the contents of the diary had occurred. We were unable to publish the diary and any part of it.” He added that the group handed over the diary to law enforcement authorities.
Project Veritas press secretary RC Maxwell told CNBC in an email Saturday that they had “no further comment” other than Friday’s statement.
While Project Veritas has not published excerpts from the diary, handwritten pages were posted on a right-wing site just before Election Day last year. Flyover Media, the company that owns the site, is registered in the same Wyoming address as Branch Six Consulting International, a company run by Richard Seddon, a former British spy who worked closely with Project Veritas, according to times. O’Keefe was once listed as a president of a company at this address.
On Thursday, the FBI also searched the New York homes of current and former members of Project Veritas as part of their investigation, according to a statement on the group’s website and The New York Times.
