“Barclays has already submitted its response to this subpoena and has complied with its obligations,” a spokesman for the bank told CNBC.

The spokesperson said the Virgin Islands “is now working to file a similar subpoena in relation to Barclays in the UK, and Barclays will respond to such a subpoena as soon as it is served.”

A spokeswoman for the US Attorney’s Office for the Virgin Islands did not immediately respond to CNBC’s request for comment on the subpoenas.

CNBC has learned that the Virgin Islands’ first subpoena to Barclays sought a suite of material related to Epstein’s related accounts, including transactions and investments.

This subpoena also requested communications between Epstein and Staley, who agreed to step down from his role at Barclays after the company reviewed initial findings from an investigation into his relationship with a dead sex offender.

Barclays is understood to have responded to the subpoena and submitted the documents in April.

The bank said in a statement that CS Venkattakrishnan, better known as Venkat, has replaced Staley as CEO of Barclays as of Monday.

The bank’s statement indicated that an investigation, conducted by the UK’s Financial Conduct Authority and the Prudential Regulatory Authority, had not found that Staley was aware of any alleged crimes committed by Epstein.

Epstein was arrested in July 2019 for child sex trafficking but hanged himself a month later in a federal prison in Manhattan.

A former friend of former presidents Donald Trump and Bill Clinton, Epstein’s long list of powerful and wealthy contacts has forced some of the world’s most prominent elite to explain their connections to him.

For example, Microsoft founder and billionaire Bill Gates lamented the numerous meetings he had with Epstein.

Virginia Joffrey, one of Epstein’s many alleged victims, has accused Britain’s Prince Andrew of having sex with her when she was underage after Epstein and his ex-girlfriend Ghislaine Maxwell recruited her. The prince denied the allegations.

Maxwell, a British socialite, is awaiting trial for allegedly introducing young girls to Epstein. She was not guilty; Her trial is scheduled to begin on November 29.
