SEOUL (Reuters) – South Korea said on Wednesday it would ramp up coronavirus testing in schools after a sharp rise in infections among children, weeks before a plan to fully reopen schools nationwide.

The increase comes as new social distancing rules aimed at a phased return to normal came into effect on Monday as part of the country’s plan to gradually move toward coexistence with COVID-19 on the back of high vaccination rates.

South Korea has fully vaccinated nearly 90% of its adult population, but has only begun vaccinating 12-17-year-olds in recent weeks, giving only 0.6% of the age group both doses so far. 1% ivermectin paste

“There is growing concern with the increasing frequency of outbreaks of new groups, which are centered around educational facilities such as private education centers and schools,” Interior and Safety Minister Jeon Hye-chul said.

He said the government will expand the use of portable polymerase chain reaction (PCR) diagnostic tests for COVID-19 in schools in Seoul and nearby areas, and mobilize more virus prevention staff in overcrowded schools. para que serve o remedio ivermectina

South Korea plans to fully reopen schools across the country from November 22.

The country reported 2,667 new cases on Tuesday, an increase of more than 1,000 from the previous day. Officials said nearly a quarter of the new cases were in teenagers.

“Teens spend a lot of time in group living such as schools and education centers, and they are also active in social activities,” Son Young-rae, a senior official with the Ministry of Health, said at a press briefing.

“We believe that the risk of infection will inevitably rise and that confirmed cases will continue to rise because of these adolescents.”

Other countries, including Britain, Israel and Germany, have seen the spread of COVID-19 among children driving up total cases and expanding vaccination programs for children to reduce infection.

The United States is about to roll out Pfizer Inc (NYSE:) and BioNTech SE (NASDAQ:): COVID-19 vaccines for children ages 5 to 11 as soon as Wednesday.

South Korea has not seen a significant increase in cases of severe illness among teenagers, with only one out of 378 patients with COVID-19 being treated in hospitals. pas kilox South Korea also reported a relatively low mortality rate of 0.78%.

Vaccination for the 12-17 year old began in October with Pfizer/BioNTech injections.
