Braves-Astros Game 6 attracts 14.3 million

The Atlanta Braves captured their first World Series in more than 20 years, and also helped reclaim Major League Baseball’s event in terms of rankings.

The 2021 World Series averaged 11.75 million viewers for the Braves set of six games against the Houston Astros on Fox Sports. The final game of the series drew 14.3 million viewers, up from 12.6 million viewers for Game 6 of the 2020 World Series. Fox Sports said the final drew an average of 13.9 million viewers on television alone.

The Braves beat the Astros 7-0 on Tuesday to win their first World Championship since 1995. Braves player Jorge Soler won the World Series MVP after completing the series with three home runs, six RBI’s and finished with a hitting average of 300.

The ratings are a major rebound from last season’s World Series, which capped a season cut short by the Covid-19 pandemic, and saw the Los Angeles Dodgers win their first championship since 1988. This six-game series averaged 9.7 million viewers, and attracted just 9.1 million Watch Game 1 on TV – the least watched World Series game ever.

The 2019 World Series drew 23 million viewers for Game 7 between the Astros and Washington Nationals, and drew nearly 13 million viewers on average. That Game 7 also helped Fox generate more than $400 million in total ad revenue, according to AdAge.

The five-match 2018 World Championship between the Red Sox and the Dodgers drew nearly 14 million viewers, and the Astros’ 2017 World Series win against the Dodgers drew an average of 18.9 million viewers over seven matches.

This season marks the last World Championship on Fox’s current $4.2 billion MLB deal. In 2018, the network extended the deal for $5.1 billion, running through the 2028 season.

Global Series Advertising Trends

Search analytics firm EDO noted that a commercial about a fitness device was among the adverts that caught the curiosity of World Championship viewers.

San Francisco-based fitness company Tonal has featured basketball star LeBron James in ads for a stationary weight machine that costs around $3,000. EDO said Tonal conducted nearly 111,000 searches for its product after those commercials aired.

EDO uses search interaction software to measure brands’ online search activity in the minutes following TV ad broadcasts. The company told CNBC that ads for Walmart, TikTok and the upcoming movie “House of Gucci” were among the top searches.

EDO estimates that advertisers spent more than $156 million during the 2021 World Championships.

Advertising firm MediaRadar expected 284 companies to be announced during the 2021 World Championships, compared to 313 companies at last year’s event.

MediaRadar collects advertising data from marketers across many media channels, including television and online. Already, the advertisers with the most spending for the MLB 2021 tournament are Geico, Google Pixel ads, TikTok, and Dell, the company said.
