How SOC-as-a-Service detects and prevents cyberattacks


In a previous episode of the SmarterMSP Podcast, Fleming Shi, Chief Technology Officer of Barracuda Networks, shared his insight on the best cybersecurity defense against ransomware attacks. In this latest episode Jimmy Hatzel, Marketing Director of Barracuda SKOUT Managed XDR, joins the podcast to discuss the value of the Security Operations Center (SOC) in detecting cyber attacks and how SOC-as-a-Service can save MSPs and customers from having to clean up Any potential damage a successful cyber attack could cause.

Jamie also laid out the incident response process for Barracuda Managed XDR and SOC, as well as what MSPs might recommend when adding a SOC-as-a-Service.

SOC-as-a-Service detects cyber threats before they detonate

During the podcast, Jimmy provides an in-depth description of how the SOC detects and identifies threats before they have a chance to explode within the customer’s network. Jamie stresses that the time period between a cyber attack penetrating a network and when it explodes is critical to an organization’s chances of avoiding becoming a victim of a cyber attack.

Many cyberattacks vary in terms of how long they hibernate before launching the attack after infiltrating the target environment. SOC-as-a-Service allows offshore service providers to detect these attacks at the earliest opportunity and inform their customers of the disaster they were able to avoid, which would not have been possible without the Security Operations Center.

Enhanced Incident Response

Another positive feature Jimmy highlighted is the incident response capabilities of XDR and SOC services. These threat remediation efforts provide the next step in a robust cybersecurity defense, after the initial detection of a cyber attack.

Without the use of XDR and SOC, mobile providers risk a cyber attack and then the ability to “jump” from one connected device or account to another, eventually spreading across the entire client network and beyond. With their XDR and SOC solutions, mobile service providers can avoid this nightmare scenario, and instead will now be able to improve their earlier response times and effectiveness. Coming back to Jimmy’s previous point, the amount of time that passes between the landing of a cyber attack and its detonation is critical to customer survival, and these services make the most of that time.
