Free stuff is not free


It’s Medicare open enrollment season. Local TV stations and cable networks are flooded with advertisements for various insurance supplements. They promise to provide “free” dental care, free transportation for doctors, free medicine, free dentures, and lots of other free stuff. Paid spokespersons talk about “benefits” and “entitlements”. They say subscribers can receive up to $100 a month in their Social Security checks. Even the phone number to call for registration is “totally free”. Read the small text and you’ll find that some plans vary by region, and some by zip code. Sometimes there is a nominal cost, so it’s not actually “free”. Contact a “licensed” insurance agent for more details. Licensed by whom? Maybe companies that sell plans.

Some advertisements pay older celebrities like quarterback Joe Namath, basketball legend Irvin “Magic” Johnson, and comedian Jimmy Walker to display their products.

Note the use of certain words and how politicians also use them to deceive people into thinking they are not getting what they “deserve” because the “rich” – these predatory, mean and greedy people – do not pay their “fair share” in taxes.

Snake oil sellers and politicians have long used eclectic language to drown out the public. This is why propaganda messages from dictators are effective. President Biden’s low approval numbers suggest that a dwindling number of people believe his claims that taxing billionaires will pay off the trillions he wants to spend. Even the word “infrastructure” is a misleading word because only a small percentage of the proposed spending is aimed at repairing roads, bridges and airports. The rest will be spent on other things that have nothing to do with infrastructure and drive us into more debt, along with a separate bill for social spending to expand “entitlements” that will addict more people to the government.

People not only have to read between the lines to find the truth, but also explore different sources of information. If you only read, say, the Washington Post and the New York Times and watch CNN and MSNBC, you are likely to believe what comes from their view of the world – government is good and is here to help you, at least when the Democrats are in power. If you read other publications, for example, The Washington Times and The Wall Street Journal, watch Fox News and listen to conservative talk radio, you will learn things you didn’t know by consuming only the left-of-center media. The media also has the ability to ignore certain topics that would give consumers a more balanced information diet.

The problem is that many people only read and tune in to those sources that reinforce what they already believe in. This is also a form of advertising.

In a letter to the editor of the Wall Street Journal, Daniel C. Oliverio of Buffalo, New York deconstructs the language of “fair sharing” with his personal story: “As a self-employed professional in a legal partnership, I am one of those highly paid people. I pay more than 45 percent of the Income taxes for New York and the US Treasury. This doesn’t include estate tax, both sides of Social Security and Medicare taxes and sales tax and lost deductions. I don’t have a trust and can’t rely on interest and earnings alone.” Here’s the key piece facing envy and envy: “I worked and saved: My whole life… I’ve paid my bills and aggressively funded my retirement. Hearing the lie that I got away with something in tax time… is frustrating. Now President Biden wants more on the mistaken premise that people like me don’t pay enough. Half isn’t enough? “

Once we celebrated and encouraged success. Now we support Medium and Fail. Then we are surprised that we get more of the latter and less than the former. Do your homework. The language politicians use and TV ads promising free stuff can’t be manipulated.
