(Reuters) – Facebook Inc (NASDAQ 🙂 Privacy and security must be built into the metaverse, CEO Mark Zuckerberg said, as he opened the company’s annual conference on virtual and augmented reality Thursday.

Facebook continues to fight criticism about its market power, its content editing practices, and the harms associated with its social media platforms. The tech giant, which reports 2.9 billion monthly users, has faced increased scrutiny in recent years from global lawmakers and regulators.

In the latest controversy, whistleblowers and former Facebook employee Frances Haugen leaked documents that they said showed the company chose profit over user safety. Zuckerberg said earlier this week that the documents were used to draw a “fake picture”.

The metaverse, a term first coined in a dystopian novel three decades ago and now attracting quite a buzz in Silicon Valley, broadly refers to the idea of a shared virtual environment that can be accessed by people using different devices.

Zuckerberg has been increasingly promoting the idea of Facebook, which has invested heavily in augmented and virtual reality, as a “metaverse” company rather than a social media company.

The CEO, speaking during a live Facebook Connect event, provided examples of privacy and security controls that would be required in the metaverse, such as the ability to prevent someone from appearing in your space. Zuckerberg is betting that the metaverse will be the next big computing platform, calling it the “successor of the mobile internet.”

The whistleblower documents, first reported by the Wall Street Journal, show internal research and employee discussions about Instagram’s effects on teens’ mental health and whether Facebook is divisive, as well as its handling of activism around the January 6 riots. Inconsistencies in the moderation of content for users around the world.

The company has introduced a large number of updates to its VR and AR products. This year it said it will launch a way for people using Oculus VR glasses to connect with their friends using Facebook Messenger and for people to invite others to a social version of their home, dubbed “Horizon Home” to talk and play games as an avatar.

Facebook also said that it will offer a way for Oculus Quest users to use different 2D apps like Slack, Dropbox (NASDAQ :), and Facebook while in the “Horizon Home” VR space.

The company, which began beta testing of its “Horizon Workrooms” virtual meeting spaces earlier this year, said it is working on ways to customize it with company logos and designs and said it will bring more business capabilities to consumer Quest devices. It also announced new fitness offerings for Oculus Quest users.

Facebook said this week that its hardware division, Facebook Reality Labs, responsible for the AR and VR efforts, will become a separate reporting unit and that its investment in it will reduce its total operating profit for the year by about $10 billion.

This year, Facebook created a product team focused on the metaverse and recently announced plans to hire 10,000 employees in Europe over the next five years to work on the effort.

Facebook also said it will run a $150 million educational program aimed at helping AR and VR developers and developers.
