(Reuters) – A man who opened fire with a pistol at a mall in Boise, Idaho, killing two people and wounding others including a police officer, died on Tuesday of injuries sustained during the violence the previous day, authorities said.

Investigators have not yet determined whether the fatal injuries resulted from a shootout with police at the scene, or from a gunshot wound before he was taken into custody, according to Boise Police Chief Ryan Lee.

The motive for the midday bloodshed on Monday is still under investigation, Lee told reporters at a news briefing the day after the attack on the Boise Town Square Mall in the western edge of the Idaho capital.

The suspect was publicly identified on Tuesday as 27-year-old Jacob Bergquist, a Boise resident. Police Chief Lee described him as having had previous confrontations with mall security and police for “disruptive behaviour.”

“We have contacted him in the past () we had no reason to arrest him,” Lee told me, adding that Bergquist is not believed to have any record of employment at the mall.

The police also revealed new details about the incident, saying that the suspect, who was wearing black clothes, fired several shots inside the mall before fleeing the building and was confronted by the officers who arrived at the scene within two and a half minutes.

He attributed the swift response by law enforcement authorities to preventing a “more serious tragedy”.

The coroner identified the murdered victims as Joseph Aker, 26, the mall security officer who was the first person shot, and Roberto Arguelles, 49, who was shot dead near the elevator and died in hospital.

Two women, aged 52 and 23, were injured as the suspect passed through the shootings at the mall, and a third woman, aged 68, was hit in her car outside the building, apparently caught in a shootout between police and the gunman. authorities said.

Police said a Boise police officer who was called to the scene was hit by a bullet from his car window and hit by shards of broken glass, though evidence shows a gunshot wound to the hat he was wearing.

Police said another man was taken by private car to a hospital and treated for injuries he sustained while fleeing the mall.

The authorities said that none of the wounded were considered life-threatening.

Lee told me the suspect did all his gun shooting, but an online police statement said he was carrying multiple firearms.
