How to become an anesthesiologist

Do you have a knockout resume? Do you like helping people? Then you have to become an anesthesiologist….

An anesthesiologist is a specialized physician responsible for administering anesthesia and pain management for patients who are undergoing surgery or undergoing other treatment. The patients treated by the anesthesiologist can range from children who may be as young as a few days old, to the elderly.

An anesthesiologist can specialize in three areas; Intensive care medicine, pain relievers, or prehospital emergency medicine (treatment given outside a hospital setting).

Typical duties of an anesthesiologist include:

  • Evaluate the patient to determine if they are well enough for surgery or treatment
  • Determining the appropriate type of anesthesia for the patient (general or local)
  • Reassure patients and answer any questions they may have
  • Give anesthetic before surgery or treatment
  • Monitor the patient’s vitality during surgery or treatment (eg oxygen levels, heart activity, etc.)
  • Resuscitation and stabilization of patients in the emergency department

For anyone who wants to become an anesthesiologist, thorough knowledge of medicine, anatomy, and anesthesia is a must. It is also important that you do not feel allergic because you will be spending most of your time in the operating rooms.

Because anesthesiologists usually work as part of a larger medical team, consisting of nurses, junior doctors, and surgeons, being comfortable working with others and making decisions is an important skill to have.

You will also need to have confidence that anesthesia is the area you want to specialize in once you have completed your medical degree, as it will take a few years of training to make the transition.

Other basic skills of an anesthesiologist include:

  • Ability to make decisions in a high pressure environment
  • Strong Communication Skills
  • sympathy
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • patience
  • Leadership
