This means knowing where every dollar is spent so that subtle decisions and adjustments can be made with important investments or even something as simple as a shift in priorities. For example, automating regular tasks can allow technicians to devote their time to more important tasks geared toward improving the customer experience.

Get to know the customer

To maintain their effectiveness, MSPs must consider the overall composition of their customer base and the profile of their ideal customer. Once this is established, it is important that you specialize in the market and define your market specialization or service specialization as commensurate with the ambition of your organization. Ideal customer profile attributes often include things that can be easily measured such as user domain, endpoints, geographic location, vertical industry, or Windows or Mac users.

It can also include things that are not easy to identify – for example, if a customer views technology as an investment or an expense. Discovering which attributes make up your most profitable posts, then targeting more of these types of customers for growth, helps simplify how the service is delivered.

Diversify your managed service offerings

Offering a variety of services is an easy way for an MSP to increase its volume and growth expectations without having to net profit from new clients. We’ve seen it happen in 2020 with the massive shift to remote and hybrid work, allowing service providers to significantly expand their service portfolios.

Some examples of diverse service offerings include helping customers improve cybersecurity or connection performance, or enabling them to switch from on-premises servers and software to the cloud.

Creating new offerings does not necessarily mean that the MSP has to create new products, design new services themselves, or even hire new workers. Alternatively, security services can be based on an external Security Operations Center (SOC), which monitors the provider for threats using specialized software and provides security information, event management services (SIEM), and so on. The right mix of offerings will be different for each MSP but diversification in security can help scale the business.

Develop the skills of your MSP team

Investing in team member training can increase efficiency and technical capabilities and MSP can help expand existing services or even add new ones.

Training also increases trust, quality of service, and customer satisfaction. It doesn’t have to be just for engineers and technicians. MSPs must invest in every employee for sustainable growth and profit. Career development plans must identify and align with business needs and benefit both the employee and the business.

Training on the tools used (RMM, PSA, Security, Backup, etc.) brings efficiency and automation; Vendor-specific training as part of partner programs brings product and status knowledge into the program; Security training and certifications reduce risk and awareness; And management training for those who go on a management path brings effective skills to an often overlooked part of a growing business.

Show positivity and empathy in difficult times

In the modern technology scene, a company’s reputation can be revealed with a few simple clicks of the mouse. All past and current employees can post their opinions online and the power of word of mouth should not be underestimated. Thus, giving employees the opportunity to actively develop skills and train new talent not only sounds great, but also helps create a culture of success.

Supporting a local nonprofit or charitable organization and participating in volunteer opportunities are additional examples of how the organization can be more involved in its community, while at the same time providing employees with ways to cope and recover from stress.

Other ways to get involved and improve company culture are through virtual social events, even if it’s as simple as weekly Zoom calls to highlight successes. It is important to maintain positivity and empathy towards customers and employees. Ensuring everyone on the team feels valued and fulfilled can help MSPs create a strong work culture, where happy employees can lead to happy customers.
