Logistyx Technologies talks about parcel shipping, holidays and returns

Last week I had the opportunity to speak with Ken Fleming, President of Logistyx Technologies. In our conversation, Ken spoke about some of the findings from a recent Logistyx survey of cross-border holiday spending, as well as some of the bigger trends around the state of package shipping.

I asked Ken to give me some deep thoughts on some of the key points. First and foremost, why did supply chain technologies weather the Covid storm better than other industries, and what did that mean for package shipping? Second, how is the ongoing capacity crunch affecting the holiday season? Third, what role does cross-border shopping play in the holiday season? Fourth, what are some industry-specific trends for package shipping? Finally, what can retailers do to prepare for the looming return season?

Parcel Shipping Status

The initial reaction at the onset of the pandemic was immediate caution because uncertainty gave rise to it. Most companies suspended all activities because they did not know the extent of the epidemic and its long-term repercussions. This means that many companies have decided to cut costs before understanding the impact of the pandemic on package shipping and its corresponding technologies. When everyone started working from home, and shopping from home, the response to e-commerce was the opposite: It went up. In a very short period of time, Logistyx’s customer base has gone from “keep it all” to “we need to move fast, we need access to better carriers, faster systems and better e-commerce technology.” Companies that had a program to deal with supply chain disruption fared much better than those that didn’t.

Consumers are looking to shop early and shop globally. The news is that supply chains will be disrupted this holiday season, so more and more consumers are starting early. In response, smart retailers assess what inventory they have and what they are going to market. These retailers make sure that consumers know what inventory is available so they can shop for their needs rather than simply buying something available. Cross-border services also remove reliance on local service providers.

Cross Border Sales

Retailers need to review the cross-border services they will use. One option is to use a 3PL provider for cross-border delivery. Companies like FedEx, UPS, and Pitney Bowes offer this service. In these services, the retailer needs to understand what will be offered and how to present it to the consumer. The last thing a consumer wants is to be surprised when the item they purchased is also subject to duty at the end. The key is to make sure all costs are transparent up front during the buying process. This means making clear the total cost of landing to the consumer, and enabling him to decide whether import duties or shipping costs affect his decision to buy. From a technology perspective, the key is to connect customer systems to carriers, since it is the carrier’s service that must be passed on to the consumer.

Industry trends

manufacturing: Manufacturers are trying to create or enhance their direct-to-consumer online presence. Brands are now creating their own shopping sites and making them come true. While manufacturers have historically relied on LTL and TL shipments to their distributors or retailers, they are now making package deliveries for the first time. This poses many challenges, but the rush of e-commerce is making this all the more necessary.

retailersIt’s all about the consumer experience. E-commerce is more important than ever, and retailers need to understand how they can enhance this experience. Fulfillment now plays into this, as retailers bring the shipping process into the online experience. Retailers need to know what service the customer wants (same day, overnight, weekend, etc.) and give transparency into the costs of that specific implementation option. It also gives retailers insight into real-time tracking and tracing so consumers know when they will receive their orders.

Returns Management

Another retail trend makes returns easier. Retailers need a clear and straightforward revenue strategy that makes the process clear and easy for consumers to follow. The last thing a consumer wants is a difficult or complicated returns process, because they may not return. Are returns free or do they charge a fee? Are fees known at the time of purchase? How easy is the return process? Is a return label provided or required? If I order, is it easy or hard to get? These are the questions retailers need to think about beforehand.
