Google is once again helping democratize business solutions that were previously only available for the Fortune 1000. Two new supply chain management solutions – Supply Chain Twin and Supply Chain Pulse – provide a powerful business tool for small and medium-sized enterprises.

“Isolated and incomplete data limit companies’ visibility in their supply chains,” says Hans Thalbauer, managing director of supply chain and logistics at Google Cloud. “Supply Chain Twin enables customers to gain deeper insights into their operations, helping them improve supply chain functions from sourcing and planning to distribution and logistics.”

Digital twinning in manufacturing was an advance beyond initial wireframes to solid three-dimensional representations or “digital twins” of a product. It has been and remains an effective manufacturing tool for product development, improvements or “what if” scenarios.

Five years ago, twinning evolved beyond products to operations – including the creation of digital representations that model the operation of supply chain operations. This development required complex and expensive hardware and software to manage the number of moving variables in supply chain operations, and the added complexity of adding a fourth dimension (time) to the process.

The spending and investment was worth it for those who can afford it because having a twin of your business operations gives you the ability to test your supply chain before any imaginable disruption. You also get a way to extract additional optimizations without disrupting existing running processes.

The pain of pandemic disruption, the growth of e-commerce, the consumer explosion, supply shortages, a darkened workforce, and the cost and scarcity of transportation have prompted many to explore twinning in their supply chains, and now, thanks to Google, they can afford it.

More companies will soon be able to build digital supply chain twins by aggregating and organizing data to get a complete view of their suppliers, inventories, weather, and more. Supply Chain Twin is a partnership with the Google Supply Chain Pulse unit. When used with Twin Pulse, users get dashboards, analytics, alerts, and collaboration communications directly in Google Workspace.

Gaining greater visibility and improving functionality is not all that this show will do. Allowing you to put pressure on your operations and come up with preventive plans and solutions can mean the difference between shutting down and surviving.
