Resilience of business practices to respond to supply chain disruptions

In response to e-commerce booms without compromising service levels, MD Logistics has developed flexible business solutions across its business by emphasizing four core elements.

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the world and forever changed the way supply chains operate everywhere.

One of the many disruptions to the supply chain during this time was the shortage of available labour. Before the pandemic, due in part to the growing demand for e-commerce, the supply chain was already suffering from a shortage of readily available labor. The days following the pandemic have exacerbated this challenge as more and more consumers are turning to e-commerce channels for all their shopping needs.

This shift, along with the need to take time off to care for family members due to illness or school closures, has created a labor challenge for 3PL service providers and supply chains everywhere. They are now tasked with finding a solution to respond to this flow of orders, without compromising on the level of service a consumer expects.

The solution

MD Logistics operates as a 3PL within two distinct and very separate industries: life sciences and pharmaceuticals, and retail and consumer goods. These two industries have their own set of handling requirements and quality controls in place to ensure product safety. Because these two areas are so different, the best way to deliver a lasting customer experience is to have separate, highly specialized teams working in each industry.

While this has worked for many 3PLs, including the team at MD Logistics, in the past, the events of the past year have demonstrated the need for greater flexibility in all areas of the supply chain. Throughout the pandemic, with some areas of our business slowing, others have gotten busier. We took this opportunity to alleviate a portion of the labor shortage we were experiencing by reviewing employment across the company. The solution is made possible by keeping these elements in mind:

cooperation. Interoperability between facilities on our four-man campus in Plainfield, Indiana ensures that all areas are properly staffed, reviewing team members when needed.

Open communication. Consistent open communication channels ensure that when additional staffing needs arise, they can be met and fulfilled.

Company culture. The culture at MD Logistics supports a “can-do” attitude and is largely a team environment. Creating an environment that supports help within the organization produces a group of team-oriented individuals who are all willing to help when needed.

Technique. Using the same WMS across the MD Logistics organization results in a smoother transition of employees from one process to the next.
