Pros: What’s so good about SaferVPN?

1. Traditional security approach

SaferVPN, despite its relatively low prices in the long run, offers most of what other VPN providers do. This includes mainstream protocols such as OpenVPN and IKEv2 which are the protocols I recommend at the moment if you don’t have access to WireGuard.

It can be deployed on many types of devices as well, including desktop computers, mobile devices, routers, and some browsers. This is important for reasons that you’ll see later in this review. Of course, you’ll also get the usual security standard when it comes to today’s VPN, 256-bit encryption in addition to the typical kill switch.

While there may not be anything special about all this, it does check a lot of the boxes that are necessary for privacy and security providers.

2. SaferVPN servers offer good speeds

With a spread of 55 server locations and an unknown number of servers running, SaferVPN is neither big nor small by today’s standards. For example, it doesn’t match giant networks like CyberGhost with more than 6000 servers in 90 locations, but it can outpace smaller networks like FastestVPN.

Also, you should take into account J2’s ownership of them, which means they can take advantage of servers operated by other VPNs in their little gang. This can be clearly seen by SaferVPN occasionally connecting to IPVanish servers during speed tests.

3. Netflix Works – Kind of

I’m addicted to Netflix, and the area I live in has a pretty sad Netflix movie library. Of course, this means that I use VPNs to access US Netflix region content. As a stingy old slicker, I tend to take full advantage of my Netflix account and get annoyed if I can’t get it to work.

Of course, I test every VPN to access Netflix. At first I was a bit skeptical about whether or not SaferVPN could do that – and was surprised when I was actually able to connect to Netflix using the US SaferVPN server.

Unfortunately, it refused to work with Netflix giving me the standard error messages every time I tried to run something. The bright spark is that if you’re using SaferVPN Chrome, Netflix will work pretty smoothly indeed.

However, this may not be the ideal solution for everyone. If you are using the Chrome extension, you must close the SaferVPN app. This means there is a glaring gap in your data privacy for everything else except the browser.

However, like I said, Netflix will work.

4. Fast and helpful customer support

One of the things I dread the most about any service (not just VPNs) is getting in touch with customer service. It’s usually daunting and infuriating, exacerbated by the long wait times given the different time zones everyone is in.

Customer service is one area where SaferVPN hasn’t disappointed. Their response was quick (I was second in line) and the agent was able to efficiently solve my problem. But this scenario highlighted one thing I didn’t like – SaferVPN won’t work with Netflix.

5. Cheap long-term plans

If you’re looking for SaferVPN for a short period of time – don’t really worry. Just search for one of the big names in the VPN field like ExpressVPN and you are done. If you are looking for a low cost VPN over a long service life, then you might consider this service.

For a three-year subscription, the price of SaferVPN drops to $2.50 per month. Although it is not inferior, it offers a decent balance between speed and ease of use that can satisfy most. There are some better dogs out there that can meet that price, but not by many.

Consider it an excellent alternative in the middle class market.

SaferVPN Cons: What I Don’t Like

1. They are based in the United States

There have been arguments about whether or not the jurisdiction in which the VPN service provider falls. However, keep this in mind: as long as you are running a business in a country, you are subject to the laws of that country.

Even if they can’t force you to do something, governments can put an astonishingly high amount of pressure on corporate entities if they wish. With SaferVPN based in the US, it’s less likely to “let things go” if they want something.

As a bigger point of concern, SaferVPN is now owned by the same company as IPVanish. The latter has previously been found guilty of keeping user records and handing them over to US agencies upon request.

All in all, not a great record, questionable circumstances to cost your privacy and security.

2. P2P / Torrent support is very limited

As I have mentioned many times, P2P or torrenting is the cornerstone of my life. I use it to find many things – you will be amazed at the amazing things you can find on P2P networks. For this reason, I have always resented service providers trying to limit these activities.

Yes, it is understandable that P2P users consume quite a bit of bandwidth, but if you are in business, save up! Some providers like NordVPN can get away with things like this since they have a huge network of servers, so users still have a choice.

In SaferVPN, P2P service is limited to three locations: the Netherlands, Spain, and Canada. Not to comment on the choice of these three countries, it simply means that those of us in Asia are SOL when it comes to P2P with them.

Verdict: Is SaferVPN Worth Buying?

SaferVPN is a good example of middle ground in providers. They benefit from association with some strong brands and can leverage their infrastructure when needed. However, it also inherits those companies’ drawbacks such as reputation strife.

Personally, this is not a service I would go for, and if you are looking for something better in the same price range, I would much rather go for something like Surfshark. It’s newer on the market but has performed very consistently so far, keeps the nose clean, and provides great bang for your buck.
