NordLynx Boosts NordVPN Speed Significantly

NordLynx is a NordVPN protocol that is adaptively built around WireGuard. The latter was described by several initial testers to be the next generation in the communications protocol. However, since WireGuard is still in development, is NordLynx really as great as it sounds?

I’ve been testing the NordLynx protocol for quite some time now and to be honest, my feelings are a bit mixed. You know that feeling you get when something works as stated, but it just feels a bit “off”?

This was my initial impression.

For more information on this topic, let’s first take a look at some nuts and bolts.

NordLynx is built on WireGuard

Communication protocols are the way devices communicate with each other to send data. WireGuard is a new communications protocol designed to operate at the interface layer. This means that it is highly portable and can be used in everything from mobile devices to supercomputers.

Given the currently existing communication protocols, OpenVPN is the most stable and secure one. However, it still has some drawbacks. These can include everything from overload to proxy problems.

WireGuard’s designer was basically looking for what most of us do – something simpler, faster, and more powerful. This is no easy feat and at this time WireGuard is still under extensive development.

The main thing to note here is that despite its development status, WireGuard has shown some pretty impressive performance numbers so far. For this reason, NordVPN decided to implement its own capsule via WireGuard and previously published it.

How does NordLynx work?

For a better understanding and review, we have conducted a number of speed tests on NordLynx. All the tests below were performed three times for each country to get a better idea of the stable performance. I was looking for potential instability as well as performance numbers in each.

The recorded download and upload speeds were the fastest for each set of tests.

OpenVPN Performance Tests

As you can see, the speeds are significantly increased when using the NordLynx protocol compared to OpenVPN. On average I was able to see what is estimated 2-3 times improvement in performance.

It is important to note that only speeds are improved, not latency. Latency depends more on the distance from the server rather than the protocol in question.

So far I’ve basically tested NordLynx since it was introduced in NordVPN’s Windows app. At first, I noticed that it seemed a bit unstable in performance. For example, I had some teething issues with Netflix where it kept detecting me using a proxy.

However, these issues resolved themselves fairly quickly and everything is going as smoothly as silk at the moment. Admittedly, it is very satisfying to finally have a VPN that works at such speeds and I still see better.

For those who didn’t like the limited number of my test results, NordVPN has run even more – literally hundreds of them. You can view all of this data on their site for a more comprehensive view of NordLynx’s performance.

In my tests, I ruled out the results of other VPN providers since NordLynx is unique to NordVPN and it wouldn’t really be a fair comparison. However, some other service providers already have trials of WireGuard underway at this time.

Optimizing WireGuard for VPN use

VPN Problems with WireGuard

WireGuard’s original performance numbers were pretty impressive. But what many VPN providers discovered early on was that this protocol had a serious flaw. At least in terms of VPN service.

According to Daniel Marcuson, digital privacy expert at NordVPN:

… requires at least some user data to be stored on the server, threatening their privacy. That’s why we implemented dual NAT and came up with the new NordLynx technology.

Part of the problem was that WireGuard was unable to assign a dynamic IP address to users connected to a server. Working on a pre-defined switching scheme, each user connecting to the server will be assigned a single IP address, defeating a large part of VPN services.

Noticeable: Earlier when I mentioned other VPN providers experimenting with WireGuard, it’s mostly “as is” as far as I know. NordVPN is the only provider I know of that has made a modification to WireGuard.

What NordVPN needed was a way to dynamically assign IP addresses that could be created and destroyed on the go.

How did NordLynx solve this

The lack of ability to dynamically allocate IP addresses posed a risk to client privacy. Without it, using a VPN service would be meaningless because in the end, permanent IP addresses would be recognized.

NordVPN created what they called the Dual Network Address Translation (NAT) system. This system basically worked with the required WireGuard static IPs and paired them with a dynamic IP generation element.

According to NordVPN’s documentation, what dual NAT does is create two local network interfaces for each user individually. One interface gets the same local IP address on the server. The other is paired with dynamic NAT which assigns random IP addresses.

Although this explanation is oversimplified, it does mean that NordLynx users will benefit from WireGuard’s speed while still being able to remain anonymous. All dynamically generated information will be destroyed when the VPN tunnel is closed.

NordLynx Usage and Availability

Since WireGuard was originally only available to Linux users, most VPN providers who used it followed suit. Today, it is widely available and NordLynx is also available to many NordVPN users.

As of April 2020, NordLynx is available to users of the NordVPN app on Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS.

Importance: If you haven’t done so already, you must update the NordVPN app before NordLynx becomes available to you. If you are running an older version of the app, you may not see this option in your menus.

Using NordLynx on Windows

  • In the Windows app, click on the Settings icon.
  • Under “Auto Connect”, select “NordLynx” as your VPN protocol.

  • For Linux, enter the Settings menu in the upper left corner.
  • Under “General”, select “NordLynx” as your VPN protocol.

Experience: How NordLynx Really Feels

To be honest, despite the increased speeds, I didn’t really notice a huge difference in the average user experience. Yes, file downloads from a variety of sources were noticeably faster, but how many of us download huge amounts on a regular basis?

There are still a few key takeaway points in addition that I would like to bring up. Note that this is personal experience and I have not conducted additional testing to verify these claims.

Faster server connections

I usually notice that the connection to the VPN server can be slow at times. This really varies widely. However, with NordLynx connection times seem faster and smoother.

Less likely to fail

Sometimes I’ve had servers fail to connect. Admittedly, this was pretty rare, especially on NordVPN, but it did happen. So far while using NordLynx, my connection to the servers has been 100%.

Browsing is not significantly faster

Although technically the speed is increased, I didn’t notice much discrimination in browsing the web very often. However, I suspect that at these speeds, it is the performance of the respective sites that really hinders the experience.

Final Thoughts: Is NordVPN Worth It For NordLynx Only?

TL; DR from this is simply yes.

NordVPN has always been one of my favorites for many reasons. In my view, it’s one of the best networks for VPN speed alone – and that was without NordLynx’s current advantage. If I include it now, my appreciation of its value goes through the roof.

It should be especially noted that you can compare this performance with its price and come to a very impressive result. Despite its performance, Nord offers one of the most competitive rates in the industry.

Finally, there is something that I personally feel is its most impressive quality, the drive to innovate. Among the VPN providers, NordVPN seems to be the only one determined to go the extra mile.

Take NordLynx as an example. When others wiggled, they simply looked at the problem, solved it, and kept moving forward. This is an innovation that is hard to find in a market built on “tried and true” solutions.
